O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in the early part of 2005, when she was a high school student. She was able to advance into the top 100 courtesy of the judges' enthusiasm about her performances. O'Neil won high praises from the judges. But she lost badly in both the Top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were shocked by the outcome and urged viewers to show support for those with great singing talent, like Melissa. O'Neil's performance was so impressive that she didn't even make it to the third place ever again. The performance she gave on the 7th of September, 2005 was so impressive that the judge Werner predicted that the headlines in the newspapers. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie, becoming the 3rd Canadian Idol. O'Neil received a phone call from Canadian the Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol immediately.
